Can anyone tell me why DSL is so expensive?

I live in the Boston area, Brighton. I called InternetConnect after I saw an ad in the papers that they were offering free DSL trials (money back guarantee..). Here the prices:
Speed Price
144 $89
192 $119
384 $149
768 $189
1.1M $229

How are they planning to compete against cable 1.5M for $40

Thanx Michael, I very much appreciate that post it gives some insight into the actual deployments going on. I find it encouraging for DSL overall.

One of the things I keep hearing from my contacts at the local RBOC is that they as a company are forced to compete in the broadband market. It's that or be replaced or reduced to things like lifelines and 911 support line maintenance.

There are some very good newsworthy items here for DSL. The FCC is doing some good things which may very well increase the speed of the DSL rollout.
