Justin:

it was fashionable for UT students
to have an orange-and-white The University decal
on the rear windows of their cars.

The same situation existed in Charlottesville, Virginia, home of the University of Virginia. I don't think it had to do with pride or anything like that. The local people had just never heard of any other university, and for them UVA was "the University". Later students had decals referring to "the University", but I think that was parody.

(Did I violate US punctuation rules in that last sentence?)
