Engineer - I guess I am a little surprised that some of the extraneous layers aren't stripped out before it is sent over the last, bandwidth constrained, link. The only reason I can think of for not doing it is to maintain max compatibility with 'normal' clients. Or perhaps they are trying to maintain the capability to talk to a LAN through a wireless link? (BTW - Although packet switched is great, as with many things in the computer world it seems to have become overdone. ATM is great because, at least in part, it nails down part of the routing and minimizes jitter et al. The whole mindset of all layers, all packet routing info, always packet switched ... all the time, has always struck me as overkill.)
