The company also launched Digital NexTV in limited service areas of suburban Cleveland, Ohio and metropolitan Richmond, Va. Each of these markets is deploying digital using General Instrument DCT-2000 set-top boxes. In these three markets, MediaOne's Digital NexTV offers consumers more than 200 channels (digital and analog) including basic cable favorites, new and original premium movies, the TV GuideSM Interactive on-screen program guide, 35 Pay-Per-View channels, and 40 Music Choice channels. MediaOne's Digital NexTV offers eight channels of HBO, six channels of Cinemax, 13 channels of Showtime/The Movie Channel and nine Starz!/ Encore channels. Including metro Detroit, today's deployment brings to four the number of markets in which MediaOne has introduced Digital NexTV. "MediaOne is pleased to offer our customers in Atlanta, Cleveland and Richmond more quality programming choices, a better on-screen guide, improved picture quality, and better sound through our new video service, Digital NexTV," said Judi Allen, senior vice president - Video, for MediaOne. "We are initially launching digital in these markets using existing General Instrument technology. We remain committed to working with GI and our other partners to evolve to a digital platform that is compliant with OpenCable™ standards that will foster an environment of competition resulting in the development of new content and hardware, ultimately creating a better product at a better price." In February, MediaOne became the first U.S. cable operator to select an open conditional access system that allows cable companies to accommodate digital set-top boxes from several different manufacturers in a given market. MediaOne selected Canal+, DiviCom and Philips to provide initial digital video platforms that will use this system and will be compliant with U.S. OpenCable™ specifications. At that time, General Instrument announced that it had committed to evolve the digital systems that it supplies to MediaOne to comply with OpenCable™ standards. This evolution is scheduled to be accomplished by the first quarter of 2000. MediaOne plans to launch Digital NexTV in additional markets in 1999 as well as expanding the service areas for Digital NexTV in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia. Digital NexTV was first launched in Detroit in 1998. In some service areas, MediaOne also offers MediaOne Digital Telephone Service and MediaOne Road Runner, a high-speed Internet access service that provides customers continual two-way access to the Internet. MediaOne Road Runner and Digital Telephone Service customers are not required to purchase cable television service. However, MediaOne offers a discount for MediaOne Road Runner customers who are also cable television subscribers.
