Markus,

I thought of all kinds of things reading your post. First off, thanks for the conversation. Secondly, I did not say what I said to belittle either man. I guess the answer I would have said there is that both men wanted to end discrimination, unwanted rule, and segregation. And both wanted to do it without violence.

By your beliefs, a "normal" man does not have the same attributes that Jesus did.

I believe the "greatest" attributes of Jesus' example we are allowed to have.

Jesus said this:

"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

Does this not embody what both men could have stood for? I am not speaking of being the Messiah/Savior. There was and is only one. I am speaking of "tools" given.

It certainly takes a very independent nature at the very least.

Yes, you know why?? It is because one will be persecuted. Both men were. Christians ARE to this day.

Jesus said:" All men will hate you because of me,"

and again: "Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man."

and this: "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me".

we talked about how we treat people some last night, and something that stuck in my mind is this: In James it is recorded:

""Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of Him to whom you belong? If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right.""

Now go back and read that last paragraph again.....I'll wait...... ok... When you get right down to the meat and taters....is it not the power hungry and the rich that oppress, by and large? The power hungry need it all... the rich in many cases need no Savior cause they believe they have it all. I believe I can show that in scripture also if you desire.

To stand up to societal wrongs that have been ingrained into a culture for many many generations as both of those men did, certainly takes independence, a sense of self empowerment, and a very strong belief in yourself, your capabilities, and your ego.

I think I could take your paragraph there and say that to stand up to societal wrongs is exactly what Jesus did on earth almost everytime he had a conversation with the Pharisees, Scribes, and "religious" hierarchy then. His empowerment came from God Almighty, as He proved every time He prayed to the Father. And I can do the same thing with a strong belief in Him, His capabilities, and my ego can be checked at the cross.

ps: I had an afterthought(for whatever reason). Did Ghandi like that name, Mahatma?
