Right. Being dropped from an index is a negative sign and would not be a reason by itself for buying a stock. Like the AXYS case, you would want to own the stock on its own merits.

However, I believe that entering an index(esp. the S&P 500) is practically a sure 5% on your money if you get in early enough. Actually, you have to have a short list of such stocks and watch them like a day-trader and move before the news is on the wires. I suspect that this strategy has been thought of already by the modern Baruch's
of the investment world and one would be competing with them.
