OTOTOT Pat, my time and effort goes into finding technologies which I think have major upside potential. Then I look for leaders - expecially those who are on the cutting edge of those technologies. Sometimes these turn out to include small companies, some with losses not earnings at all. Since I decided "networking" was too narrow, I began to look for other rapid data transmission mechanisms and decided that telecom - concentrating on wireless and fiber was where it will be at - not necessarily where it is at. :-) This was a few years ago. Turned out that seems to be the case. First added LU and NT to my CSCO base. Second I looked for flyers. In wireless that was relatively easy. Qualcomm jumped up as a fine company. Right technology, fine management, etc. etc. Loral and G* have gone nowhere. But still have potential IMO. In fiber, thought UNPH was best equip supplier I could find. Turned out well. Ciena less well. But also still has potential IMO. BTW prefer equip suppliers to service providers using the adage of years well past that it was better to buy the companies that sell the steel and other supplies to the railroads than buy the railroads themselves. I just prefer that. So, a long long answer to your question, and a sort of lame excuse - specifically I don't have the foggiest idea what HLIT's near term earnings are likely to be, but think it has demonstrated it is in some areas of strong potential and seems to have capable management. Note: I believe UNPH is in the catbird seat in fiberoptics component supply and has shown outstanding ability to pull together disparate pieces all around the globe and beat even its own ramp up targets. Doesn't get much better than that IMO. But given the new rules on accounting, JDS Uniphase may now show a loss. Is that a signal to sell. No way. So let's just say I prefer quality to any specific earnings track. :-) Not the usual approach, and in no way do I recommend it to anyone else. Each person needs his/her own approach with which he/she sleeps at night. I sleep well at night - but that's me. Chaz
