You mean 3com tried a frontal assault, or nibbling?

3com, IMHO tried to take away the consumer/retail end because they weren't in a position to go after the enterprise data routing end of the biz. They left themselves vulnerable to commoditization, and that's where they failed.

TLAB is nibbling at the high end. Still dangerous. IMHO TLAB/CSCO makes great sense as a combo and would clearly put LU on the defensive. Will it happen? who knows. CSCO doesn't like buying big co's, so it's unlikely. Same holds true for an Ascend-like acquisition (they haven't done anything that big unless you count Geotel, which I don't). But TLAB or QWST, for example, would surely get them into a powerful position vis a vis Lucent.
