I suspect the majority of auctions on eBay have "shill" bidders, either done in an organized manner by the retail outlets dumping unsold retail merchandise, or by individual sellers who put a few fake bids in order to try and move the price up. I know that's what I would do if I was trying to sell something at a profit on eBay.. Generate fake interest with fake bids..

Eventually, people will start realizing that they're not actually saving any money over retail, and move away from a barter-era system of transactions and back to a fixed price system which most of the industrialized world uses..

Ebay has not figured out a way to seek unethical sellers from establishing multiple ID's and bidding up their own auctions. But then they also have not figured out how to keep their computers running, so I suppose that is no big surprise.
