annette, i am still amazed that only 50% of household are online in the U.S., which not only shows how much growth there still is here but what about the rest of the world and who but AOL is positioning themselves everywhere. i was Zurich a couple of weeks ago, first time in 3 yrs when i lived there for a time and so little has changed regarding the internet. it is still very expensive and many still use internet cafes to spend time online. i have friends there who now have internet access, but only use it at work due to cost.
the deals AOL has in Europe, South America, this position in China.com and so on will place AOL in a very pretty position as these other areas of the world come online.
Robert Pitman a couple of weeks back on CNBC when questioned about the free access in England and how it would affect AOL, said they infact they saw a positive effect and the opportunity to expand. Imagine if they can put together this type of deal in Europe, a free AOL computer, the numbers will explode and they will become the place to go for online shopping. the baby has a very bright future.
