NRC Team Dispatched To Davis - Besse Nuclear Plant

<< A Nuclear Regulatory Commission special inspection team has been dispatched to the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station to monitor the plant's condition after a tornado last night damaged the plant's switchyard and disabled the plant's ability to receive off-site power. The plant automatically shut down at 8:43 p.m.

The plant's emergency diesel generators are operating providing power to the plant's safety systems. There is no evidence of release of radioactivity within the plant or to the environment. The plant is in a stable condition. No injuries were reported.

The NRC team is comprised of reactor, electrical and mechanical specialists. NRC resident inspectors were at the site monitoring Centerior Service Company's activities throughout the night.

The utility declared an Alert at 9:18 p.m. last night. An Alert is the second level of a four-step emergency classification. An Alert indicates events which have occurred or are in progress that involve actual or potential significant degradation in the level of safety of the plant. Agencies onsite and offsite were notified by the utility.

The Davis-Besse plant is located at Oak Harbor, Ohio. >>

Wonder how much fuel they have on hand for the generators? ... Good rehearsal for similar Y2K problems?

Residents of Oak Harbor, Ohio should start drinking their 100 cups of coffee per day or taking No-Doz tablets NOW!

<< Drinking coffee could protect people from radioactivity, according to scientists in India who have found that mice given caffeine survive otherwise lethal doses of radiation. >>

FINANCIAL MARKETS ARE NOT READY FOR YEAR 2000
BIS (Bank of International Settlements - July 1, 1999

BASLE, Switzerland, July 1 (Reuters) - The world's financial markets are still not ready for the Year 2000 change and much work still needs to be accomplished, the Joint Year 2000 Council at the Bank for International Settlements said on Thursday.

''The productive exchanges today between senior representatives of major public and private financial sector organisations made clear the significant progress on readiness being made in financial markets,'' Council Chairman Roger Ferguson was quoted as saying in a statement.

''However, the meeting also indicated that much work is still to be accomplished; therefore we will need to remain focused in our efforts and avoid complacency,'' he said.

The Joint Year 2000 Council on Thursday held a meeting of public and private sector representatives of the world's banking, securities and insurance industries.

It noted participation in mandatory tests for the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) interbanking payment system remained low and urged supervisors to check whether participants had successfully tested with the system.

The Joint Year 2000 Council was established in April 1998. It is jointly sponsored by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems, the International Association of Insurance Supervisors and the International Organization of Securities Commissions.

As part of our year 2000 project ... we have introduced a MANDATORY test programme ... COMPULSORY testing will take place from 1 August 1998 to 31 July 1999 ....

The objectives of the programme are to:
- Reinforce the urgency for customers to prepare thoroughly for the year 2000
- Ensure consistent and comprehensive testing in the S.W.I.F.T. community
- Help customers demonstrate their ability to exchange messages over the S.W.I.F.T. system under year 2000 conditions.

Sounds like many don't know what the word "compulsory" means.

Zapping Radiation With Pills - Drug Protects Thyroid by Blocking Absorption
W A S H I N G T O N, March 16 — It seems so simple, handing out pills to people living near nuclear power plants to prevent thyroid cancer. But 20 years after potassium iodide was touted as a radiation therapy in the wake of the Three Mile Island accident, it remains controversial for states considering its use ...

The drug would protect the thyroid by blocking its absorption of radioactive iodine.

After the 1978 accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, a presidential commission strongly recommended the stockpiling of potassium iodide near all U.S. reactor sites ...
