Hi ypz, sorry I didn't see this before I headed out for the w/e.

Put simply, AMZN caters to people with very little time but plenty of money, while WMT caters to people without much of either.

They do a good job, too. I once commented to an exec. at a more upscale retailer that clothes at WMT seemed to cost more than far superior stuff on sale at, say, Macy's. She responded that WMT's customers prize, above all else, the ability to do all the shopping in one place, with the assurance that they aren't getting screwed on prices, and without the risk that their kids will see and beg for something they can't afford. Throw in the fact that lots of WMT stores are located in semirural areas where the competition consists of "charming" small stores charging very high prices, and it is easy to see why they succeed.

It will be a long while before AMZN and WMT bump up against each other. For now, WMT's online strategy smacks of a management trying to get Wall Street analysts off their backs, and possibly to keep other retailers from raising too much easy money on the strength of a vaguely defined web strategy.
