That is very sensible, I do the same thing whenever there is a thunderstorm approaching. I even unplug my PC whenever I leave home in case there is a power surge. I don't want to rely on my surge protector to keep my PC from becoming fried.

E, I have never regretted buying my UPS (uninteruptible power supply). A good one can be had for about $100. Mine has beeped about 10 times in 2 years because it prevented a power surge, and twice saved me when the power went out totally while the hd was writing. It is also a far better lightning protector than those strip protectors. BTW, if you take apart the most expensive strip protector and a fairly cheap one, they are nearly identical.
