Inmarsat vs I*

I agree not having data ready sooner was a mistake.

You are correct about the Mini-M connecting directly to a G3 fax or PC. How many people lug around a
G3 fax machine when they travel? Certain industrial segments will, but most people won't.
Data is important and most companies like construction, oil/gas, etc have big Inmarsat terminals for high
speed data. These are not portable.

Even for the Mini-M, they are much heavier and less convient to use. I* is a good enhancement to
exploration teams that have a Mini-M. They can leave it someplace and everyone else has handsets they can
move around while talking on.

I've used a Mini-M before. I hated the delays, echo, etc. I had to hang up and call again some times because
the call quality was so bad. The set-up takes several minutes and is a real pain in the neck. I much prefer the
I* call setup: turn on phone, extent antenna, check for signal strength, make call (15 seconds).

Mini-M has a 12 step process that take 3-5 minutes. I* has much better battery life and will let you leave the
phone on to get a call or use I* paging to get a message. You can't do that with the Mini-M because they
have not messaging service and you don't have enough battery life to leave it on too long.

My contact tells me I* is working on data and expects to have it ready this year. I* data will be 2400bps
just like the Mini-M. They haven't given up on Fax either.

Inmarsat has had over 16 years to perfect this stuff, give I* a year. The I* handset is next generation stuff for
voice and it will attract a lot of Inmarsat voice users.
