>Part of the problem is that I have mostly listened to recordings, I have only gone to a handful of performances, and not necessarily the best. Maybe I would change my mind if I had a season ticket to the Met:-)...<

Absolutely. The Met is magical as it is. But there is something even more magical about a first rate performance. To see Pavarotti singing "Nessun Dorma" at the apex of his form, surrounded by gobs of people and a huge audience, DANG! That'll get to you in some way if you have a little bit of heart. The intensity of the whole scene just seems to urge him onward. The audience actually becomes part of the performance. Its wonderful.

Once you've experienced this, a very very great performer singing live, then when you hear his/her recordings you hear and feel that live moment for the rest of your life.

Everyone should go hear a world class orchestra in a world class hall playing something inhumanly magnificent like Beethoven's 9th. If they did, "Puff Daddy" would go straight outta business in three days.

>...Did you see the Pollack show this winter? It was great. Also, there was a fabulous DeKooning show that went from the National Gallery to MOMA several years ago...<

Unfortunately not. They don't let me out as much as they used to. I'll have to start getting around a bit more. (grin)

>...I may have a copy of "Old Man" lying around in a closet...<

Well I hope you get a chance to read it. Again, I am no great fan, but there is something special there. You really kinda respect the characters, even the fish, perhaps especially so.

Man Neocon. You really are a dang pleasure to talk with.
