Spanish speaking people in general don't speak English as a second language as most European do. The strongest force in Latin America are parents who care for their children. The parents have worked a lot to get basic life conditions organized, like food, housing and health care. Their highest priority now is to get a better future of their children. The see internet as a must for their education. Internet access in Chile tripled last year and will do this year again. End of 2000 will be at least 1 million access accounts, representing double the amount of users. Peru did catch up even faster and already has 1 million users. People who can't afford an account or PC go to internet-cafes, which have been opened in all parts of Lima. Costa Rica has the highest rate of Internet access in the region and Jose Figueres, the former president is pushing hard to pick a slice of silicon investments to his country (Intel and Motorola have plants in this beautiful country). Europe might be a common market without borders but has many languages, Latin America has just two languages, Spanish and Portugees. Telephone companies have been privatized in the whole region. Most countries have, or will upgrade to full fiberoptic networks. Starmedia has offices in all mayor capitals in the region. And it is not just presence, they are involved in web site development for other companies. Now is the time to step in. They will need one or two years to create the regional infrastructure. By then Latin America will have 10 million accounts and 20 million users. If PC prices go under US$ 500 growth will be even higher. Remember, TV penetration rate in Latin America is 98%. A TV costs about US$ 200. It is not too bold to predict that by 2002 the PC household penetration rate will be 20%. Live from Santiago de Chile
