First US Air, now UAL-United Airlines names 'home-boy' as the new President.World's largest airline names Indian as president ual.com Richard Springer SAN FRANSISCO 2 JULY CALCUTTA-born Rono Dutta has been named president of UAL Corporation and United Airlines, the largest airline in the world. Mr Dutta, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate, will serve as UAL president from July 13. Mr Dutta's appointment comes close on the heels of another native of Calcutta, Rakesh Gangwal who was appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of US Airways, the sixth largest airline in the United States. Forty-seven-year-old Dutta, currently senior vice president at the planning division of the airline, will assume ''responsibility for all aspects of United that directly touch the customer,” the company said in a statement. He will also oversee North American and international operations and assume leadership of United's alliances, marketing, on-board services and cargo. The appointment was part of a major restructuring exercise at UAL and Mr Dutta will now work under James Goodwin, currently president and operating officer at United, who rises to the post of chairman and chief executive officer. Mr Goodwin, a 32-year veteran at United and popular with the unions and employees who own more than 55 per cent of the company's shares, replaces Gerald Greenwald who retires next month. Mr Greenwald said the changes were part of a ''strategic reorganisation that makes our senior-level talent focus on our top business goals or 'core objectives'.” Mr Dutta earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from IIT, Kharagpur, and a masters degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School in 1980. Mr Gangwal and Mr Dutta previously worked together at a management consulting firm, Booz-Allen & Hamilton in Chicago, before working together as senior vice presidents at United Airlines as well. Mr Dutta, prior to joining United and after his stint with Booz- Allen, was manager of planning for Bell & Howell in Chicago from 1984-85. —IANS (http://www.economictimes.com/today/03lead04.htm)dailynews.yahoo.com
