"Cheap PCs" aren't a threat to Dell.
This is the best thing for Dell. People buying these cheap computers are generally not well funded, or are computer novices. They wouldn't buy a nice Dell computer anyway. Not yet, anyway. When they get a taste of computers, and feel more comfortable with them, they will want a nice one. It has happened to everyone. You start out not spending that much, thinking, "this is all I'll ever need", but soon are feeling that you have a clunker. Soon, you're making excuses to yourself to buy a nicer one. Dell will pick up much of this upgrade business. Also look for Dell to do big business with it's ISP business coming up. I will be getting on board with them. I hope you all will too. Hang on all. We'll be back. Mike.

<<Am I missing something?>>

nothing is free. the free pc movement has limited reach, limited scope, limited pricing, limited support, limited systems: in other words, it's limited relative to affect. if may affect the consumer side of the market (gateway) but has had no impact on the business side. 99% of businesses can't run effectively on the free pc structure as it exists.

anyway, Dell's stock price has had little to do with free PC's. it's had more to do with the hold about 9 market makers have held over Dell upward movement. that hold is being slowly broken. there are weaknesses developing in their "defense" methods

The PC is free to me because I am BETA testing it. They only put out 10,000 pc's for testing. Anyone getting a free pc now I believe would have to pay a monthly ISP charge and guarantee usage for 10 hours a month.
Believe me when I tell you this pc is NO threat to DELL. It is SOOOOOOO slow and has a lot of advertising all over the desktop.
