Northstar's Lisanti: Most Stks Will Do Well In 1999

NEW YORK --Mary Lisanti, chief investment officer for equities of Northstar Investment Management, thinks 1999 will be the inverse of 1998.

"Last year, the top 50 stocks were doing well while the rest of the stocks had tough times. This year, now the rest of the market will do well while the top 50 will have a tough time," Lisanti told CNBC in an interview Friday.

This switch is part of a larger trend that the world is experiencing. Lisanti said the world has gone from 60% in recession to a current stabilization, and is heading toward a global expansion.

Lisanti said demand for semiconductor chips, oil services and capital equipment is increasing.

She recommended Atmel Corp. (ATML) with enormous operating margins and products being used in the new generation of cell phones.

She said she thinks "second-tier companies," like Lam Research Corp. (LAMR), Teradyne Inc. (TER), and Novell Inc. (NOVL), will do well.

"A more interesting play will be the biotechs," added Lisanti. With possible Medicare changes and price controls agenda, Lisanti said more drug companies will buy some biotechs.

Lisanti recommended investors "look at companies with product pipelines like Biogen Inc. (BGEN)."

Thanks for the summation of her comments...I only heard her last sentence...then they led her onto drug stocks.

The "Whisper" site doesn't have any comments on it yet...but I keep checking. Expect earning about July 20th, my guess.

This has 2 things going for it - growing revenues and margins. Woman this am said atml's margins at the top last time were 26% - only 6% now!

Trade in and out if you want but I believe this stock is going much higher over the next 2 years. World will be a very friendly place for chip stocks for a while - remember 1993-4-5. Well we're in 1993 now. 1995 was the blow out year - ran way up - peaked fall 1995 then down and choppy for the next 3 years. Been waiting for this for couple years - thought we might start early - spring 1998 - fortunately didn't get suckered in too much.
