This discussion is acting as if you must own all the stock you can or none of it, that's ridiculous.

There's no need to be absolutely in or out of a company like jds/uniphase.

Market timing is damned near impossible, but jds/unph is extremely expensive. It may always be extremely expensive, but there's nothing stopping it from potentially getting to a 25 pe on CURRENT earnings in a tough market. if only a few people get scared about y2k and everyone else wants to wait until the new year, many stocks could compress, and the high pe's stocks may get the most punishment.

UNPH is at or near our end of 2000 price target based on modest upside to 2000 estimates. however, i can't tell how powerful the jds/unph product synergies will be and i want to own this thing for the next 5 years. Our strategy? we own enough to enjoy the rise, but would be thrilled to see the stock below $100 again.

It is dangerous to own jds and be certain that it won't get cut in half and it is dangerous to not own it on the certainty it will get cut in half.
