Michael,

IMO DSL is the best alternative for high speed internet access. DSL gives the user an unshared pipeline to the Internet. Cable modems use a token ring topology and as more people in the neighborhood sign up for cable, the bandwidth goes down because its shared between the users. Also, excite@home just recently cut the customers upload limit to 128k per second.

The April 20, 1999 edition of PC Magazine, pcmag.com has an article on page 158, titled, "The Faster Web". They perform an in depth analisys on the various cable, ADSL and sattellite connections in a number of cities. You may be able to find this article on their website.

Other web sites for research include:

CableModemInfo.com
cablemodeminfo.com

ADSL Forum
adsl.com

Universal ADSL Working Group
uawg.com

In ansewer to your second question, The Windows 98 release 2 will provide ability for multiple users to share a single modem or internet connection. Multiple computers in the home can be connected to the internet at the same time through one connection. While this is not practicle with the analog modems, cable and ADSL would be perfect for this.

BTW, neither of the high speed internet options are available to me at this time. My phone lines are so noisey I can only connect at 28k. I have threatend to sell my house and buy a house where they offer these services. But, the are supposed to offer Cable and ADSL in my are by the end of the year.

Good luck,

Ken Holbert

BTW what is PM? Private Mail or Published message.

OT Another request for help from any of our resident experts. Now that @Home Cable Modem service has just become available in my neighborhood, I plan to replace an outdated 166 mz Pentium system with no speakers and frequent system resources warnings with a better system. Would appreciate any input with how I should allocate my funds to best appreciate the coming of streaming video on the Internet. Pentium III, K6 or Celeron? Is 128 meg enough RAM or should I get 256 or 384 meg? Any suggestions for what specifications I should look for in a Graphics Accelerator? Since I suspect my present "no name store assembled" system may have some component incompatibility problems as a cause of its frequent crashes, I am leaning toward buying from one of the "name brand" retailers this time. Gateway has a storefront nearby but would be interested hearing good or bad reports on any of the major brands, with particular emphasis on after the sale service for someone who doesn't like to explore below the "sleek consumer friendly interface" TIA, please reply by PM.
