I can't visualize a Tercel. My erstwhile 1986 Volvo 240 (well, it's still a Volvo but no longer mine) used to carry my boat, which is longer than 15 feet, just fine. You anchor the ends to the front and back tiedown spots (built-in, Volvo is a neat company) using long bungee cords.

I can't imagine that carrying the boards on a roof rack is more infra dig than carrying the boards without one.

Oh Idunno. You should get a welder to put a nice roof rack on a Miata. Weld it into the fenders.
