Merritt, What I meant was that the United States was a backward nation without most social services and a predatory robber barron dominated economy. More like a third world backwater than other industrial countries. Unions were finally gaining ground and then the govt. decided to do something for the people instead of for the big politcal contributors. They went too far, but that is often the way when you move from ignorance to enlighenment.
