Microsoft acquires Swedish GSM company

By Bob Trott ... Thursday, Jul. 1, 1999 5:29 pm PT

In a move to shore up its wireless Internet offerings, Microsoft has purchased Sendit, a Swedish company that specializes in providing wireless service for mobile computing users, the companies announced Thursday.

In a statement, Microsoft said it plans to make Sendit, based in Stockholm, the core of a new research and development center. Sendit will function as a complete business unit within Microsoft's server applications group, and will drive Microsoft's carrier-based mobile Internet server efforts.

"The Nordic countries are establishing themselves as the 'wireless valley' of the world," Mats Wennberg, regional director of Microsoft Nordic, said in the statement. "Microsoft has long recognized the level of competence and technical skills that exist in this region."

Sendit specializes in Internet software for GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) operators and cell phone manufacturers, with technology designed to let operators offer customers e-mail access via GSM cell phones and handheld computers.

Microsoft announced its intention to buy Sendit for $127.5 million in May. At the same time, Microsoft took another significant stake in wireless portable technology, investing $600 million in Nextel Communications.

More than 90 percent of Sendit's shareholders approved the deal, according to Microsoft.

Based in Redmond, Wash., Microsoft Corp. is at www.microsoft.com. Sendit AB is at www.sendit.se.

All...Need some help. Internet Explorer 5.0 seems to have gone nuts on me. I can't access any web pages without a Content Rating. Can't even get into IE 5.0 Help Screens because they're unrated. I never even recall setting up Content Advisor, so I don't a clue as to what the Password is. Anybody have any ideas? (Please, don't tell me to dump IE 5.0.)

Thanx.
Morgan
