BTW,the writer of this story put in the incorrect Lam Research symbol, its LRCX.

LAMR is Lamar advertising. Both stocks in the $40's, but Lam Research is the chip equip.

Yeah, glad I bought them chip stocks last Oct98 (lsi, vlsi), and others (CY) recently that haven't moved until last month. A great way to juice up the portfolio!

Jul. 02, 1999 (Computer Reseller News - CMP via COMTEX) -- Boston - Novell Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt has laid out an aggressive strategy to fill the channel with directory-enabled network products before Microsoft Corp. ships its Windows 2000 network operating system this fall.

One of the first applications on deck will stem from a project with Cisco Systems Inc., San Jose, Calif. While the alliance with Cisco has at times appeared shaky, Schmidt told CRN the relationship should bear fruit by late summer.

"Let me just say up front that things are going well with Cisco. We invented some technology which allows the directory to directly manage their routers. . . . It's a configuration manager in the sense that it can manage alerts and manage the settings of various switches and so forth."

Schmidt said the new tool would not replace Cisco's own router and switch tracking mechanism-Total Control Manager/SNMP-but would run in conjunction with the router. Cisco could not be reached for comment.

One VAR spoke of a recent experience in which a "configuration problem zapped 15 of our customers' routers several weeks ago. Most of the damage was fixed within an hour or two, but we spent a full eight-hour day to reconfigure them, while users on various segments of the network were offline. If we could push down an automatic reconfiguration through NDS [Novell Directory Services], it would have saved us $2,000 in nonreimbursable consulting time."

But that is not the only ingredient of the product stew now brewing. Novell also plans to release a single sign-on tool, which Schmidt dubbed the single biggest problem customers face. Novell this week will launch the single sign-on product and offer a software developer kit on a single CD to ease integration. Also on tap this week is ZENworks 2.0, an administration and inventory-management tool for software, updates and profiles.

As part of the ManageWise product family, Provo, Utah-based Novell also expects to ship a policy-based management tool, code-named K-2, by year end.

K-2 beta tester David Gersic, director of operational systems support at Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Ill., likes the concept of solving bandwidth shortage problems. "Certain users will get more bandwidth under quality of service," he said. "The political battles with quality of service make it difficult to implement in a university structure, but it would be easy in a corporation because you can [allocate bandwidth] by applications and rank on the org chart."

Novell Consulting, now more than 300 strong and growing, would play a large role in designing systems around NDS, but extending fulfillment and integration work to the channel was another key goal, Schmidt said.

"We figured out that there is a part of consulting that we have to do for large customers and it's essentially directory architecture," said Schmidt, adding that Novell's revenue was equally divided among channel and direct sales. While Novell plans to keep its channel close, it needs to keep its own consulting group closer, observers said.

"They are not eliminating working with third parties, but they want to have some amount of that business themselves because there's a lot of benefit to it," said Vivek Roa, senior vice president and software analyst at Gruntal & Co. LLC, a New York-based investment firm. "Consulting and services will be a high-growth business in the post-2000 time frame."

Platinum VAR Michael Grady, president of Gracon Services Inc., Okemos, Mich., advised channel players to revisit their business models to focus on services and integration.
