Jeff: <<< I can't believe it happened in this country.>>>

Believe it. In the sixties there were a lot of people who were very unhappy with the state of affairs in this country...and many, perhaps most, chose not to run away to some foreign shore. This caused our government to be very uneasy. It's the nature of government to protect itself, and they do so with whatever means they deem necessary, or that they feel they can get away with. IMHO, it was the public outcry that resulted from the murdering of students at Kent State, that put some restraints on the gov's actions. Fortunately, we're still a democracy, and that scared the then current regime.

Rulers want to rule.

Governments dress themselves up in different clothes (communist, socialist, democratic, or whatever), but they all lust for power. It's up to the people to prevent abuse of that power.

A few years ago, I read that Costa Rica only had about 1500 police in the whole country, and no Army...and it made me think, "what a civilized place that must be, the government doesn't feel the need to make war on their people, or on others."
