I have a 21 inch monitor, and on the new site the message is LOST. All you see are color bands and links. The page has to be narrowed.

I agree that the page has to be narrowed to about 600 since many people can't figure out how to do it themselves. (Although 640 is the total maximum screen width that can be expected, one must set the actual table width to a lower value to account for the browser's scroll bar on the right and the surrounding window border. ZDNet uses 590. Marketwatch uses 581. CNNfn uses 600.)

And my general point is not about specific colors, but about design and why some things work and some don't. Your gray colors don't work for a very good reason: They fail to distinguish the message from the other page elements. The table border around the message on your suggestion and on the original SI design also detracts from the message. In the current beta design the message floats in the negative space created by the white space on both sides. That's lost if the box returns.

By the way, I too use a 21" monitor set to 1280x1024 resolution. The current spanning design is not a problem for me since I know how to narrow the browser window. Clearly, though, that is not something that everyone is willing to do, so a set width to 600 should be established.
