Web Users Bypassing Portals for Specialty Sites, USA Today Says

Bloomberg News
July 2, 1999, 5:24 a.m. PT
Washington, July 2 (Bloomberg) -- More Internet users are
heading straight to specialty Web sites, bypassing Internet
portals such as Lycos and Excite, USA Today said, citing data
from Nielsen/NetRatings. Though use of the Internet grew last
month, visits to portals remained at about the same level as the
month before and increased by only 5 percent from March to May,
compared to double-digit growth a year ago, USA Today reported.
The shift may mean that portals -- which command the most
advertising because their audiences are largest -- will lose
advertising money to specialty sites focusing on topics like
education, sex and finance, the newspaper said, citing analysts.

Hi Foad,

I have no inside knowledge on the SEEK - DIS alliance, I am just going by the charts and the rumors.

I do think that SEEK has one of the best portals around. I use it for my home page. Their content is great, has good graphics, its never slow or has bad links. I also use YHOO's which stinks in my opnion (I do own shares in YHOO vis softbank so I am not biased). Yhoo is so slow and sometimes I can't even get on.

Getting back to the tracking stock, remember how these internets trade after the IPO. If DIS prices the IPO at 55, it could open a lot higher.

SEEK should easily hit 70 in the next month or so and could rally back to its highs. I think any DIS announcement will push SEEK to 70-80, where there is alot of resistance.

Have a good vacation. I visited Spain a while back, went to Marbella and the southern areas of Spain, then to Morrocco. I agree with Clint, drink up the port! and bring some back for us on the thread.
