We are running the same size monitors and rez, what is the first thing you see when you read that post. I see the color bands and loads of other distractive material. And what I see when I look at it is the message on two lines since my browser window is set to about 640 pixels. My eyes are now accustomed to using the olive bands on top and bottom to frame the message. It does so very effectively. The white space on either side of the message further frames the message. Adding the table box merely adds a second unnecessary horizontal above and below the message, but also adds a vaguely distracting vertical element on each side. I prefer the white space. These are design issues that arise often when a change is made. My major point is that other than the width problem, they have a good design here and that I, for one, would be disappointed to see them abandon those good elements.
