Entire Soviet Block worked on Barter..Soviets would send them Oil, get back pharmaceuticals from GDR (German Democratic Republic)... Buses from Hungary and on...The "aid" to arabs and cuba were weapons ....:)
At least Cuba would send Sugar in return..:) Iraq still owes Russians tons of money for SCUDS..

Absolutely.

Just as the loans made to bail out Mexico were backed up by their oil production. Gold can certainly serve this purpose as well... but it still doesn't make it currency, IMO.
