MSN has quietly rolled out the free web-page service that seems to have become a necessary part of all self-respecting portals. Find it at homepages.msn.com

It's set up on the GeoCities model with street names vaguely linked to topics. "Windows Way" and "Redmond Ave" are the two choices in the "Computers & Internet" topic, for example. The equally limiting "Religion & Beliefs" topic has "Dharma Drive" and "Spirit Street" as its thoroughfares.

What I found surprising is that a "Powered by TalkCity" logo is prominently posted on the main page. Netcraft tells us this about TalkCity:
www.talkcity.com is running Netscape-Enterprise/3.0G on Solaris

There don't appear to be any homes built on the streets yet, so I can't tell if all these Win-centric sites will be sitting on Unix servers, but it looks like that's what's about to happen. The pages are hosted at Frontier's GlobalCenter in California which is where TalkCity's servers are located.
