Letter to editor, NZ Press July 02, 1999
Sir--More than any other of our resources, the productive land has, throughout this century, provided the means whereby we can enjoy a relatively high standard of living. Now our productive land is under threat.

Perhaps the chief threat comes from an urbanised population, who do not appreciate the connection between a box of trim milk and the messy business of calving a cow. Yet it is this urbanised population which has the political and administrative clout to put farmers off their land.

Floods, droughts, and pests can quickly ruin farmers if they lack necessary Government support. But the political support is often lacking.

A thousand decisions made by city folk, from OSH, power and petrol companies to roading authorities, could ruin farming.

Perhaps we need to watch that we are not killing the goose that is laying our golden eggs.
