That's a good one. I must have been just about the same age, when I first tried cooking without supervision. Early Saturday morning and my mother was still asleep. I read a recipe in some girl's magazine for bran griddle cakes, using Kellogg's all-bran, which I knew we had. I think I followed the recipe pretty well, but it didn't say to make individual griddle cakes, aka pancakes, just said to pour it on the griddle, so I poured the entire batch of batter into the frying pan. It filled up the pan, and it didn't come out right, at all.

Another time I asked my mother if I could make bacon. She said yes, but only the Canadian bacon, which is basically ham. I thought bacon was bacon, so I dumped the rasher of regular bacon into the frying pan, and it started making a lot of grease, and I asked my mother what to do. She said to pour the grease into a jar. Which, come to think of it, was a dumb thing to say, but she was asleep. So I poured the grease into a jar, and then cleaned up my mess, and asked my mother what I should do with the jar full of grease, and she said throw it away. So I picked it up and it was hot, naturally, and I dropped it, and hot bacon grease and broken glass went everywhere. It took forever for me and my mother to clean it up.

After that, I kinda quit cooking for a while.
