I thought he controlled Ticketmaster. What was the unsuccessful attempt you referred to?

Barry Diller of USA Networks controls TicketMaster. Here's a story from Janauary 1998 on that:

It mentions Paul Allen as an investor. I can't find an article that details what happened with the investment, but, as I recall (with the help of a few articles from the time), Allen was majority owner (80%) of TicketMaster and was on its board but failed to reach agreement with its management on control issues. When Diller came along, Allen sold part of his interest in Ticketmaster to him and traded some to become a part-owner of USA Networks.

Here are two stories from the Seattle Times that deal with Allen's investment style:
5/4/97: The confusing interactive worlds of Paul Allen

2/26/96: The $6 billion sideman Despite his wealth, Paul Allen prefers to be a team player

And here's one of several early Wired stories that weren't kind to Allen:
9/94: The Accidental Zillionaire Microsoft spawned two billionaires. Paul Allen is the other one.
