Ready for the Bounce

Investor optimism about the world economy was a big factor in fund
performance for the quarter.

''Investors started becoming more aware that the U.S. economy was very
strong and that world economies, especially Asia, were flat to getting better,''
said Robert J. Martorelli, who runs the $547.2 million Merrill Lynch Phoenix
fund, a mid-cap blend fund that took the No. 12 place among domestic
diversified equity funds, returning 29.1 percent. ''In that kind of environment,
cyclical companies tend to perform well.''

Mr. Martorelli, 42, said he was buying oil and gas and other cyclical stocks at
the end of 1998 and early 1999 ''because that's where the value was.''

Among his biggest winners was the LTX Corporation of Westwood, Mass., a
maker of equipment for the semiconductor industry. LTX experienced
slackening demand during the economic debacle in Asia last fall, but its stock
rebounded as Asian economies stabilized, Mr. Martorelli said. He added that he
liked LTX because demand for its new type of chip-testing device was
growing rapidly along with the market for multifunctional chips used in
increasing numbers of products. The stock rose 177 percent in the quarter.
