Jesus was criticized for associating with publicans and prostitutes. It didn't seem to hurt him very much. It probably helped the publicans and prostitutes.

I most certainly did not mean that one should select one's friends using such external criteria as class membership, educational level, color, race, creed, nationality, or whatever.

The people I call my friends -- by which I do not mean acquaintances -- are people whom I find spiritually (Ooo,that word) congenial. People whom I value for their human qualities.

Personally, I could not regard a person such as you describe as a friend. And at least half of my friends are men. (Platonic, of course. <g>) That is all I meant. I would advise you to dump those well-educated, well-heeled SOBs, if you hadn't done so yourself already! <gg>
