Jenna - I am trying to go back and look at some of these earning plays over the last few qtrs. Is there a chart out there somewhere that will overlay the earnings release date on the price graph like your weekly letter does? Thanks.

Jenna, a timely question about shorting earnings plays. I have looked at some possible shorting strategies for earnings during my research. I haven't pursued them since I have mostly concentrated on long strategies. They involved relationships between moving averages and previous quarter stock performance (may be similar to your "lower estimates" idea). However, what looks promising is what I have noticed recently while tracking earnings plays. Just using price movements before earnings, I seem to be able to differentiate between earnings plays that will go up after the report and those that will go down. The ones predicted to go down could be shorted. I also am trying to distinguish those for shorting from those for merely selling before earnings. Now I don't have much data yet and haven't tested this real time yet, but I'll keep studying it. I imagine the addition of some technical indicators would improve the prediction, as I have seen you make some good calls about when to hold through earnings. I'll keep you posted. Maybe I can do a test run of my strategy with this week's EPs. John
