JBE; I have to second your feelings on the new pages, they carry
things to an extreme "glitsy" & over crowded let's floor them
with our html expertise. It looks as if SI is going the way of
so many others. What attracted me at first was it's simplicity
and that he content of posts are better than most you can find
on public forums.
The drop down windows are a real mess when you try to use them,
of course I'v always hated drop downs, I guess frames will be
next.
This is apparently is what we are going to be stuck with, and
I'm not yet sure I will find it worth my trouble to hang around.
So if they read this one , I guess they can count one vote
for staying with the older format, and making any changes
slowly a complete make over of SI could well
undo all the good will that has been built up over the years,
and if the posts deteriorate to the quality of Yahoo then I know I'm
gone.
Jim

0) Somehow I gave the impression that I was on the development team. I'm just like everyone else here - a user. Sorry if I led you to believe otherwise. Anyway, I think I can help out with a couple of your questions:

1) In re "Search this subject only" - Bryan said here or on another thread that its omission is temporary to the beta server, and it will included later. I'm hoping that some other improvements will be coming with it, including but not limited to operands.

2) Missing thread index - you're right, they're gone. You can go back using the jump-to-message-number box at the right, but there is still no current method of getting a chronological listing of messages at that point. Definitely a tool that will need to be re-installed in some form.

3) Who reads this thread? We know Bryan does, and I think Steve does. We could use some clarification as to whether or not the feedback option should be used in addition to posting feedback here. Bryan?

4) Long lines. Agreed. Bryan stuck his neck out and quasi-committed to developing that as a user option. In the mean time, you can adjust your browser window to a comfortable size.

I think the new site is fabulous. I use it exclusively now, It has the same speed as the old site and I have only one complaint - A BIG ONE - that has been posted by jbe:

<< 1) The "this subject only" button on the search box -- a new feature on the old SI -- is MISSING on the Beta site. Bummer. That was a great way to search back subjects/people on a particular thread.>>

MY ONE and ONLY complaint: Please bring this feature back!!!!!!

jbe

I read your post and wanted to respond to your comments/questions.

1 - Searching "this subject only" will be added back into the new SI.

2 - RE: The numbers at the top of the thread on the subject page. We got rid of the numbers, but we added an input box that allows you to jump directly to a specific post number. However, I was just playing with that feature and realized there is a bug. Currently, it links you directly to the individual message. It is supposed to keep you on the subject page with the message you selected at the top of the list, i.e. and the next 40 showing. Also, I think it ouwld be more useful to have that input box available at the top as well as at the bottom of the list. Implemented in this way, it should be even more convenient than the old system We'll add that to the bug list and get working on it right away.

3 - This is definitely not just Vent City. I have personally read every post on this thread, as well as a couple of other threads that are actively discussing the beta site. If you want to know "who I am", I don't like to brag <vbg>, so just check out my profile. In fact, we sincerely appreciate all of the feedback we've received so far. Unfortunately, we simply don't have time to respond to every request, but we are prioritizing and the SI team is cranking as fast as they can.

4 - Regarding the new message format. Check out a post I made earlier in response to Cheeky.

Hope that answers your immediate questions, and we looki forward to continuing to improve the site based on your feedback.

Thanks...Bryan
