The materials came from a Home Shopping Network junk sale and you got your plans from a Popular Science magazine, most likely. You have made a couple of errors which proves you are trying anyway. The biggest one is in the photo on your site showing a sensor sniffing a low pressure gas line built with 150 lb. malleable iron fittings schedule 40 screwed pipe my questions are :- Why is the lubricated plug type valve in the off position? Why,if the gas pressure is on, are the ground face unions on the wrong side of the valves? Why is there not a regulator, or a pressure guage, or a pop safety valve terminated in a safe area shown? Where is the inspection certificate? The smell of gas has saved thousands of people lives and limited property damage. Please show some respect, and in the future get the facts straight. Point of interest:- I just bought a natural gas detector system to install in one of the high school labs that I help maintain. I do not believe in buying Mickey Mouse sensors, I got it from a Canadian company that has been building gas sensors for nearly 50 years. If I don't know something,I'll ask someone who does, then I'll verify their answer with reference material. I asked the plant engineer about their Hydrogen sensors during a tour of their plant. The answer was; the biggest problem was that a customer would call in the middle of the night complaining their warning alarm would not shut-off.A service rep would be dispatched immediately only to confirm there was a high concentration of Hydrogen present and tip-toe back out of the building. Humans use their senses for danger and technology is not always fail-safe. This fellow did not have any reason to lie, he understood the serious nature of gases,in fact he tried NOT to make the sale.It was only after I explained how scared the teachers & students were because of the recent school shootings,& bomb threats,& students leaving the 3 inches of water column pressure gas jets open, did he recommend which model to buy. The sensor c/w expansion ports would save money by requiring one main safety-shut off valve and the built-in audible alarm set of dry contacts could be wired to a relay, then wired to an external warning horn and flashing light. 'OLD WIVES TALES' thrown around as facts are dangerous. This site is for intelligent scientific discussion not some carney hucksters selling their wares.
