What does short selling have to do with running one's company day
to day? Lots of shares get shorted every day. Do these companies
stop running? Do their plans fall through? Do sales fail to materialize? I could understand some kind of buyout or merger
falling through, but ordinary operations?

Unfortunately there are no answers for rhetorical questions.
