If I understand things correctly, having $2000 available in margin loans would qualify you to purchase an IPO. You would still, however, have to get the actual cash to pay for it before the settlement date. I think that this is the main reason to move securities from the cash bucket to the margin bucket.

The other reason is, it doesn't do any harm whatsoever -- unless you're a compulsive gambler and will use as much loan as they're willing to give you.

Okay...so there is some part of you that is considering buying on MARGIN for the first time and then using those stocks as collateral? Right?
