"Absolutely. I think you'd be a lot of fun to go have a drink with.
Most men are ok, as long as you don't have to live with them."

That's what I tell my wife all the time. I have suggested to her that I move to a log cabin in the Colorado Rockies where I would spend my days fishing and hunting and she could spend her days working and shopping and trying on clothes. She could send me money for beer, cigarettes and fish hooks and visit me on holidays. I would even fry up some trout for Christmas dinner.

Most men are ok, as long as you don't have to live with them.

Well, a lot of us take a certain mephistophelean pride in not being okay under any circumstances whatsoever. Don't sell us short please.

Women are far more insidious. Unlike men, who in general are just genetically predisposed to be unlivable (and therefore should feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever), I have found that women are more premeditated and devious about it. For example, I have found myself slowly but steadily over the course of several long term relationships being slyly divested of nearly every vestige of my former life. Not a stick of hideous furniture. Not a single corporate logo coffee cup. Nary a faux oil seascape lovingly purchased on layaway from Sears. The two foot tall beer stein from Munich? Ha. And again, Ha. My former admittedly tasteless life consists in the main of a few boxes of various trinkets and diplomas, along with an envelope with some yellowed love letters and photographs. All buried deep enough in the storage closets to where they are entirely inaccessible.

And lest you think this be an isolated situation, allow me to assure you that most men in the state of matrimony are in nearly the same situation as myself. We are without a past. This is because every woman knows that the Prime Directive is to create an environment where we hapless menfolk gradually come to believe that nothing whatsoever mattered before she traipsed into our lives. You will be assimilated...
