mike...re "think of the analogy cable tv to tv "

can't think that way, because it is a hypothetical thought....broadcast tv which is free reaches more receivers then all the cable tv companies in the world combined....households had tv's before the advent of cable....consumers didn't have cell phones prior to cellular service....computers rarely had modems prior to the bulletin boards, services as prodigy, and current isp's.....

free airwave programming does compete with cable....if it didn't you wouldn't have federal and local regulations on cable and satellite signal delivery....

cable companies at the present are monopolies...why give equipment away if you are the only game in town???? cellular and isps are in a competitive market...must offer something to the consumer to sell the service....until cable is deregulated in the usa, you won't see major investment in broadband...investment increases as monopoly terminates...basic business, nothing new...the portland case is significant...it could open the floodgates to new technology both wire, cable and wireless....
