Oh, goodness, your children have it easy! My daughter always does the dishes, unless she is ill, and dumps all the trash everywhere, and helps with projects like cleaning the garage. Of course, we do not have a maid, although my friends growing up who had them all had mothers who absolutely insisted that children do the same chores around the house, servants or not, so that they did not get spoiled. However, we are not that tidy, either, so it all balances out. I feed the goldfish and the cats, do all of the investing, bill paying, family organizing, vacation research and do the garden planning and watering. We all go grocery shopping, but I do all of the cooking, which is why we get healthy take-out food several times a week. Everyone helps pull weeds, and my husband takes care of the car, the kitty litter, and the garbage. It is a pretty traditional division of labor, but we all like it that way. For some reason no one is assigned to vacuum, clean the bathroom (in San Francisco, one bathroom is typical in houses of less than $500,000), dust or sweep and mop the kitchen floor (because there would be a mutiny). However, we seldom have guests, and the fact that some are coming motivates us to tidy the house fairly quickly. Anyone who is disgusted by dust or dirt is certainly welcome to jump in at any time, and they do.

I am relieved to find that I am not the only mother who insists on occasional room tidying. I think it is important that children learn basic cleaning skills, so that when the full-rebellion years are over, they have some sense of how to live beautiful lives.
