We both know that the US did not need a rate hike. One of us knows that Japan needs economic reform in order to be able to survive without our assistance;-)

Sergio:

No doubt that Japan needs Economic Reform... But the U.S. also needs a strong ally in Asia given the current low point in relations between the U.S. and China... There are many political deals that might not make economic sense on the surface but make but make perfect political sense... An example is all those third world loans we continue to make over and over again only to forgive them... It doesn't make economic sense but it makes good political sense... That's how the U.S. buys influence around the world... That's what kept Russia in line during the Kosovo conflict... So, we raise our interest rates when inflation is low to keep the value of the dollar strong against the Japanese and other currencies... This helps local economies around the world sell their own goods... Eventually one hand washes the other...

Lava anyone? : >
