There's a line in the story that cmgi's purchase says that the market over values other portals. That appears to be the peeimistic view, rather than saying that av was bought cheap.

But the comparisons are somewhat flawed, and the valuations based on current rev's is not a generally accepted method of valuing inets. AV is not really portal, at least not yet. It is still a fairly pure search engine. And rev growth is still in its infancy and a poor way to view the longer term value of these companies.

Still, the article makes the point that the AV buy was indeed well priced, and DW should be proud of his purchase. One point remains to be considered: How many large scale portals can the net accomodate? How many do we need, and how many will survive over the long term. The ones that survive should be very profitable, but are 4 too many? What about 8? It appears that yhoo, lcos and seek will survive, but which of the others will find a future on the net? These things have yet to be seen.
