Hi melinda. I have this thread bookmarked and as time permits I lurk, jumping in when I have something to say. I took Spanish in jr high school, so have forgotten most of it (except the naughty words). Had German in college, but have forgotten most of it too.

I learned about cat language from Peaches -- the only cat I've ever met who understood spoken English. I suspect the other cats think he must be mentally retarded because he can think slowly enough to understand English. But he is one of the smartest cats I've ever met.

Picked up dog language from Ginger (a crackerjack of a Basenji) when I was a kid. She was very patient with me, since at the time I did not know about animal languages...she had to teach me from scratch.

Studied Russian on my own a bit in high school along with American Sign Language (Latin was not enough of a challenge) and some Italian when I worked for an Italian owned cruise line (at the same time I attempted Portuguese, but couldn't wrap my brain around it). Also grabbed a year of biblical Hebrew and two years of Koine (biblical) Greek in seminary. With all that background, two years of linguistics seemed like a natural, and it really helped me with pronunciation.

The easiest of all was Teddy Bear Language. Imagine my surprise the first time I visited Toys R Us...I had to buy a pair of ear plugs.

"Dar" was the name I gave to my security pillow as a toddler. No wonder I am drawn to this thread...
