David,

About fonts -

Both use sans serif font for everything except the actual message text. Beta does too, except for private messages, which are currently displayed in sans serif.

I'm using Netscape, if that makes a difference. The Beta SI uses the font that I specify in Netscape preferences for the message text, and a sans serif which does not change for everything else on the page. I'm not complaining, just commenting, I think this is a good thing.

But here's something odd. Look at this poster's name in new and old SI.

In old SI, I see Gaston Billetes with an accent on the o. But in new SI, I see Gast3/4n Billetes, with the 3/4 being a single symbol.

Why should it differ between old and new SI?

... Scott mentioned earlier in this thread that he was seeing a gradient in the colored bars. I observe the same thing - it's an effect of a LCD screen on a laptop. The bars will appear to have varying gradients as the position of the user's head and eyes move relative to the screen. There is also a tendency for reversed or white text to become "washed out" on a dark background.

I'm looking on a regular monitor now, and I don't see any gradient. I did move my head around when looking at the LCD screen, but the left side of the bar always looked lighter.

I guess it's an artifact of cheap LCD screens.

The Grayed-out text on the last message of a thread (Next, and Next 10) is still so light as to be almost invisible.

Scott

I have found what may be a HUGE drawback to the beta version. In VSI (Vintage Silicon Investor), you were able to go to a poster's profile and see their last 100 posts. In the new version, you are only able to see the last 20, which might be just the last day. It was extremely useful to see a poster's prior comments, and what threads they frequented, as it helped establish the credibility of the individual.

Perhaps one of you has found a way around this drawback. If so, please share.
