The drives you describe are to be found in people of higher intellectual and social development. I am sure that Barrett, and others of his ilk, are totally lacking in them, and can no more comprehend them that a Flatlander can comprehend a sphere. Therefore, they declare that such drives do not exist.

"What makes a Balkan girl spend her life in caring for the dying?
What makes an Austrian Catholic boy attempt to conquer the world?
What makes a German Jewish boy spend his life trying to understand the functioning of the universe?
What makes a Chinese boy want to revolutionize his society, while millions of oppressed people starve quietly?"

GREED and/or FEAR.

Analyze their actions and you will find the basic driving force(s) is (are) there...

For example:

Q. "What makes a German Jewish boy [Einstein] spend his life trying to understand the functioning of the universe?"

A. The basic inner greed -- insatiable hunger -- for knowledge.
