Conquering Time and Space America Online already dominates the time that Americans spend on line, through its flagship dial-up service and other brands, like CompuServe for the value-minded, Netscape for business users and ICQ for the cyber-hip. But the company has big plans to lure many more people to sign on more often and for longer periods. Share of the 785 million hours that Americans spent on line in May, at home and work. AOL's version 5.0 software due this fall, will add features like ways to transmit family photos and post car pool schedules on line. There will also be more advertising and more items for sale....ON MORE DEVICES... Starting next year, AOLTV will let users superimpose E-mail, chat and instant shopping on their TV screens as they watch programs or surf the Web. Even sooner, users will be able to check E-mail on Palm Pilots -- and, ultimately, on anything with a screen and a link to the Internet....AT HIGHER SPEEDS Bell Atlantic and SBC, and later Direct TV, will offer AOL Plus, a broadband service with instant Internet connections and high-speed downloads. The cost will be about $40 a month.
